{"id":2938,"date":"2012-01-25T16:09:06","date_gmt":"2012-01-25T08:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/?p=2938"},"modified":"2012-03-29T23:32:10","modified_gmt":"2012-03-29T15:32:10","slug":"tour-of-duty-in-kota-bharu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/tour-of-duty-in-kota-bharu\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour of Duty: Kota Bharu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, if you\u2019ve been following me on Twitter, you would have known that I\u2019ve just returned from the far north of Peninsular Malaysia, in a town called Kota Bharu, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Kelantan.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tweet-3.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2965\" title=\"FFFFFF kota Bharu tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tweet-3.bmp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It would be my first time in Kelantan so you know how it is always exciting to come to a new place for the first time. Getting to Kota Bharu had proved to be not an easy task as I had to go through an 8-hours long drive, probably the longest road trip that I had even been on in the Malaysian Peninsular thus far. <!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tweet-2.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2966\" title=\"Twit about all sponsored trip to KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tweet-2.bmp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>There are a few options of routes to Kota Bharu from KL and based on recommendations from some Kelantanese friends, I took the shortest one \u2013 the one that would take me through the ever famous district of <strong>Gua Musang<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/direction-map.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2939\" title=\"KL to KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/direction-map.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Driving across the middle of Peninsular was such an eye-opening experience. It really was like getting to know Malaysia better and I had to tell myself again and again that this country really is blessed with beautiful countryside.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160985.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2940\" title=\"Beautiful countryside along the way\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160985.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160985.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160985-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gua Musang is probably one of the most mentioned places in Kelantan may be because of its location which is quite far from other towns in Malaysia. IT is such a place that inflicts distress and uneasiness among teachers and Government officers may be because the idea of being posted here and live their everyday life away from the rest of the world is too much to bear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2976\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160966.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2976 \" title=\"Gua Musang\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160966.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160966.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160966-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gua Musang Railway Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But of course now that it is well-connected with Kota Bharu to the north and and KL down South, Gua Musang has since lost its fear-inflicting power. In fact, the existence of so many hotels and motels are quite evident to the fact that many people come here nowadays to celebrate its beautiful and peculiar natural landscapes.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2942\" title=\"peculiar hills in Gua Musang\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160980.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160980.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160980-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, I arrived in Kota Bharu when it was already dark and the silence of the city struck me as odd as I drove around to look for a place to settle in at least for the night. Then solution came in the form of Tune Hotel and I suddenly realized how I missed the feel of being a traveler &#8211; only this time as a domestic traveler instead of a foreign one.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160994.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2943\" title=\"Tune Hotel in Kota Bharu\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160994.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160994.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1160994-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I can\u2019t quite let how the fact that Kota Bharu is so different from what I had heard about go unmentioned. \u00a0Being known for its political background and strict Islamic Law, I had expected Kota Bharu to be so Islamic where people don\u2019t wear anything that reveals more than their ankles or something. Oh well, of course I had thought it wrong. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170387.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2960\" title=\"Dangdut group in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170387.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170387.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170387-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would say Kota Bharu by its looks is already so modern and so are the people to say the least.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170370.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2978\" title=\"roundabout in kota bharu\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170370.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170370-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>If the level of modernization of a city is gauged by the existence of tall buildings, I don\u2019t think it is quite the case here in Kota Bharu where the land is so flat and they are plenty of spaces for new buildings without jeopardizing the city landscape with towering structures (which I\u2019m not a big fan of) and all.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/2012-01-20-08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2961\" title=\"Flat Kota Bharu\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/2012-01-20-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, there are certainly so many things to write about Kota Bharu and Kelantan as a whole. For one it is so good to see a different side that gives more color to the country. I mean, you come to Penang and Kuala Lumpur and Malacca and Singapore (and most probably Ipoh) and you\u2019ll see how they are so similar at least \u2018culchineseturally\u2019. Here,\u00a0 for instance, you don&#8217;t expect to see girls in tight dresses and mini-skirts at Ladies Nights. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170586.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2959  aligncenter\" title=\"Ladies Night\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170586.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170586.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170586-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to the strong influence from the neighboring country Thailand, the foods here are also so different from what we regularly see in the menus at restaurants and food stalls in Penang\/KL\/Malacca\/Singapore\/Ipoh. I wouldn\u2019t say that they are the exact copycat of what they have in Thailand because I\u2019ve come to find out that Kelantan really is truly unique in their own cuisines.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170270.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2979\" title=\"Nasi kerabu in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170270.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170270.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170270-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had my very first taste of <strong>Nasi Kerabu<\/strong> on my very first morning in Kota Bharu and I instantly liked it so much so that it had suddenly become my regular food for breakfast there.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170269.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2944\" title=\"Nasi Kerabu in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170269.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170269-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had my first dish of Thai Salad (<strong>Som Tam<\/strong>) when I visited Bangkok for the first time back in 1998. I almost forgot how much I liked it until I returned to Bangkok 3 years later. I had no idea when I was going to Bangkok again so I was so sure it\u2019d take awhile before I&#8217;d get to eat Som Tam again \u2013 or so I thought. Who would have thought that I\u2019d find it in Kota Bharu?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170048.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2946\" title=\"Som tam mortar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170048.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170048-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gosh \u2013 I can easily get enough of any food \u2013 ANY food at all &#8211; but Som Tam is the kind that I\u2019d LOVE to have on my dinner table every day. While I am a big fan of Malay-Thai food despite its <em>halalness<\/em> and all but I don\u2019t think I can go through weeks or even days without feeding my mouth and stomach with something Chinese. Good news is, there\u2019s always a place for Chinese food in town.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2948\" title=\"non-halal warning at chinese restaurant\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170024.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170024-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Heard they do serve beer here but the fact that I was there on a job-related task\u00a0 kinda hindered me from pursuing it. It was my good-boy time you know.. \ud83d\ude1b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2951\" title=\"Guo chap stall in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170037.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170037.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170037-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You know how cuisine enthusiasts in Malaysia and Singapore have been arguing whether it was Penang who copied the foods from Singapore, or whether Singapore copied it\u2019s Chicken Rice from Ipoh or vice versa, I think Kelantan is quite safe from all the food fact disputes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2949\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2949 \" title=\"Gua Chap in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170031.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170031.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170031-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guo Chap - A Must try in KB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even at food stalls you\u2019d see all kinds of 3-in-1 packets and I have to say I\u2019ve never even seen half of them \u2013 let alone TASTED them so couldn\u2019t help but getting into a tasting frenzy while I was there.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/2012-01-21-07.211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2952\" title=\"kopi kucing galak\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/2012-01-21-07.211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While I enjoyed being foodie all throughout my stay there, I gotta tell you that beverages in Kota Bharu can be so sweet and sugary it is quite likely that you\u2019d get diabetes if you stayed there for too long \u2013 unless of course you know how to order \u2018em.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You gotta tell the waiter how serious you are about putting less sugar in your drink because they seem to have a problem understanding HOW LESS IS LESS. I\u2019d usually mention <em>\u2018kurang kurang kurang manis\u2019<\/em> every time I ordered my drink and they still come up with something so sugary I\u2019d have to pour some more water into it. Kelantan can pretty much suffocate you with their variety of local pastries and cakes and most of them I was quite unfamiliar with but there seems to be a problem with them &#8211; you know they are (overly) sweet and sugary even before you take a bite.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170227.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2954\" title=\"local cakes in KB\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170227.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170227-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Years of being ruled under the &#8216;highly Islamic&#8217; PAS has probably changed the people of Kelantan at least in the way they hold on to their Kelantanese sentiment. While it is true that they have their own language (I wouldn\u2019t say \u2018slang\u2019 because they really have their own words), I had come to find out that they were some of the most welcoming people that I\u2019ve ever come across with.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170531.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2955\" title=\"friendly KB locals\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170531.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/P1170531-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The idea of having somebody from as far as Sabah seems to excite them a zillion times more than it does knowing that they\u2019ve got somebody from Thailand living in their very neighborhood. It\u2019s always good to see their faces brighten every time I tell them that I\u2019m from Sabah although there was one time when a pakcik asked <em>\u201cWhen did you come to Malaysia?\u201d.<\/em> LOL. Of course he later apologized when he realized something was not right with his question.
