As usual, the challenges began at the train station when I had to push my way in with all my might and let myself be sandwiched in the super-crowded train at least until it reached the intended destination \u2013 the world renown Batu Caves on the outskirt of Kuala Lumpur.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3618\" title=\"Sandwiched in a train\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2012-02-07-09.30.21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2012-02-07-09.30.21.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2012-02-07-09.30.21-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/>I wouldn\u2019t have wanted to go through all the rough experiences if it wasn\u2019t for Thaipusam \u2013 a festival that for me the only \u2018real festival\u2019 here in Malaysia. Drawing hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world to commemorate the occasion when <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Parvati\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parvati\">Parvati<\/a><\/span> gave <a title=\"Murugan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murugan\">Murugan<\/a> a <em>vel<\/em> &#8220;spear&#8221; so he could vanquish the evil demon <a title=\"Soorapadam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soorapadam\">Soorapadam<\/a>, it was certainly a celebration worth getting sandwiched for. \ud83d\ude00<!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3619\" title=\"crowds upon arriving\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180013.jpg 552w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180013-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/>People have been piling up since morning so I joined the crowds with the same level of excitement that I had had last year. \u00a0The sun was blazing hot and the heat was potentially perilous but it didn\u2019t stop the people from joining what was always considered one of the greatest festivals in the region.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3620\" title=\"joining the procession\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180053.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180053.jpg 552w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180053-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I went to Batu Caves and brought with me a promise that I made last year, that I\u2019d be joining the procession up to the cave instead of just watching it from the sideline like I did back then. With that promise tightly wrapped around my waist, I promptly got myself into the line and joined thousands of Hindu devotees to climb up the flights of stairs \u2013 all 272 steps of it \u2013 and witness the offering of Milk and Kavadi to the Lord Muruga up at the temple.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3621\" title=\"climbing up the stairs \" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180071.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180071.jpg 368w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180071-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oh well, climbing up the famous stairway at Batu Caves might be physically challenging at any time of the day but on the hindsight it actually offered an escape from the scorching sun which was what I needed most. Besides, with only a light sling back and a camera to contribute to the weight that I carried with me, it was nothing compared to those carried by kavadi bearers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3622\" title=\"pink kavadi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180224.jpg 371w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180224-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The view as seen from the stairway was already breath-taking on its own but the view of the sea of people that comes with it was simply amazing. It is there that you\u2019d see how big and important the celebration is to the people. I could see kavadis of all sizes and decorations and women dressed in beautiful costumes with flowers neatly tucked in their hair and devotees carrying all kinds of \u2018burdens\u2019 on their backs \u2013 all contributing to such a colorful and visually captivating celebration.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3623\" title=\"looking down at the sea of people\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180094.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180094.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180094-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The continuous chanting of \u2018Vel Vel!\u2019 from the marchers and the sound of gendang that comes with it brought an air of hilarity into the celebration. I was actually enjoying my moment there.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180236.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3177\" title=\"sea of people down there\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a>Of course, Thaipusam at Batu Caves is most notably known for its extreme acts of devotion among the pilgrims and it came as a no surprise that they are the ones that draw most of the attention (and curiosity) from the tourists who are there to see the actions LIVE for themselves.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3624\" title=\"feather studded kavadi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180107.jpg 371w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180107-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If witnessing the devotees carrying those heavy kavadis against flights of stairs up to the temple in the cave is already visually painful, wait until you see they do the piercing of flesh as part of their act of penance. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3625\" title=\"lemons hooked to back\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180200.jpg 371w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180200-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You\u2019d see all kinds of things hooked to their flesh and skin and I have to tell that they are not the nicest things to see. I winced at the sight of somebody being pierced with a skewer right through the cheek. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3626\" title=\"piercing of cheek\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180195.jpg 371w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180195-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marching up to the temple at the cave had proved to be so worthwhile. There were definitely a lot of interesting things to see as I looked around from a high standing point. I saw people getting blessed and (some) fainted right after that they had to be laid down to the ground until they regain consciousness. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3627\" title=\"looking down to the sea of people inside the cave\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180161.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.jipp-world.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/P1180161-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A man went into a fit of tantrum and shrieked at the top of her lungs after receiving a blessing from one of the religious men. The air of spirituality was highly felt that for a moment I could feel a wave of goose bumps flowing on the back of my neck.
